Disaster Recovery (DR) Architecture on AWS, Part I: Strategies for Recovery in the Cloud
In this blog post from AWS, you'll discover several strategies that can help you recover in the event of a disaster. Read through for critical insights that will help you safeguard your infrastructure.
What is Disaster Recovery (DR)?
Disaster Recovery (DR) refers to the strategies and processes that organizations implement to prepare for and recover from disruptive events that can impact their workloads. These events can range from natural disasters like earthquakes and floods to technical failures and human errors. DR is a critical component of a Business Continuity Plan, as it helps minimize downtime and data loss, ensuring that business operations can resume as quickly as possible.
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum acceptable delay between a service interruption and its restoration, indicating how long a business can tolerate downtime. Recovery Point Objective (RPO) defines the maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time, determining how recent the last data recovery point should be. Both RTO and RPO are crucial in shaping DR strategies, as lower values typically mean less downtime and data loss but may also incur higher costs and operational complexity.
How does AWS support DR strategies?
AWS offers a variety of resources and services to support Disaster Recovery strategies, including the ability to design architectures that meet specific RTO and RPO objectives. AWS Regions consist of multiple Availability Zones, which help reduce the risk of localized disruptions. Additionally, AWS provides tools like AWS CloudFormation and AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) for consistent infrastructure deployment, as well as options for multi-Region and multi-AZ strategies to enhance resilience against various disaster scenarios.
